AVA CONFERENCE IN PERTH, 26th - 30th MAY 2008.

THE ACUPUNCTURE/HOLISTIC SECTION on Wednesday 28th May and Thursday 29th May, and then to the post-conference Tui Na course which starts on Friday 30th May and ends at lunchtime on Sunday 1st June 2008.

The Western Australian holistic veterinary community have decided to make it well worth your while to visit Perth in May 2008, by providing two world class veterinary courses you would normally have to travel to Florida, USA to take part in.

Perth, being the hub of veterinary alternative medicine in Australia, now has a teacher at Murdoch University Veterinary School to teach Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCVM) to the fifth year veterinary students. His name is Dr Bruce Ferguson, and he has been purpose trained at the Chi Institute in Florida, USA to teach TCVM to veterinarians.

Bruce has agreed to teach his Chi Institute TCVM Food Therapy course in the two days of lectures the AVA has allowed for the combined acupuncture/holistic Special Interest Groups. This means your conference registration fees for the four conference days will include the certificated TCVM Food Therapy course with no more to pay.  You can just pay daily rates for the two days if you do not want to attend other streams on Monday and Tuesday, although there are some excellent sessions worth attending on those days too – see AVA website for details.

The AVA conference will be held at the new Perth Convention Centre in the heart of the city, close to the river and King’s Park.

The Friday at the end of the week is left for “Field Trips” or more practical, hands on sessions for the various groups providing lecture sessions at the conference. Following the tradition of previous years, we have decided to turn this acupuncture/holistic field trip day into two and a half days, allowing us to hold a second certificated course on Tui Na, or TCM massage, again taught by Dr Bruce Ferguson.

To make the course more cost effective and more peaceful, and to provide accommodation for those who wish, we have been lucky to be able to hire an excellent venue at reduced cost from a benefactor who wishes to encourage the teaching of natural therapy techniques.

The house is set in bush, has plenty of parking, has a large pleasant room for teaching, and two smaller living areas to put up tables for practical sessions. There are six bedrooms, so we can accommodate six people as singles, or up to twelve if twin sharing rooms, at $25 per head per night. The rooms are clean and pleasant. You can also travel to and from other accommodation if you prefer. We will organise Qi Gong, stretching and walking sessions during the course to keep the Qi flowing. Food will be provided at a small extra cost.

Course fee is $440 inc GST for the two and a half day course.

Below is the timetable for the combined acupuncture/Holistic SIG's program for the Wed and Thursday of the 2008 conference in Perth, WA.

Western Australia TCVM Herbal Medicine June 2-3, 2008 Perth

Module Two: Dermatology

In this second module of Western Australia TCVM Herbal Medicine we will address the plethora of dermatological disharmonies and presentations found in most vertebrate species by focusing on cats, dogs and horses. We will learn the TCVM origins of dermatological disorders, review the primary herbs for such disorders, TCVM skin lesion correlations, and review differentiation of patterns of disharmony which will lead to correct herbal formula selection and prescription. Live cases will be incorporated into a clinical, hands-on morning where tongue, pulse and other characteristics will be used to make a diagnosis. After demonstration of this methodology by the instructor, students will “work-up” cases in a TCVM fashion and use acupuncture to treat and herbs to prescribe for the patients. Either Module One or an equivalent introduction to TCVM Herbal Medicine is prerequisite. Cost $500 for course, notes, and free case consultations for one year. Post-AVA Conference, Monday and Tuesday, June 2-3, 2008.
